Monica Gaskell, Winifred Saunders and Kathleen Tomlinson had been working in Leicester and Leicestershire as volunteers for various animal welfare groups since 1953.  They often wished they could form their own group and in 1965 their dream became a reality when, due to the generosity of Miss Daisy Murcott, The National Animal Trust was founded as a registered charity on 3 May 1965.

Since that time The National Animal Trust has helped thousands of animals – rehoming cats, kittens, dogs and puppies and providing veterinary treatment for ill or injured animals.  Since the very beginning The National Animal Trust has always believed in prevention rather than cure and, through our subsidised neutering scheme, we have prevented thousands (far too many to even estimate a guess) of unwanted kittens and puppies being born.

None of this could have been done without the help of our volunteer fosterers, drivers and fundraisers, or the countless friends who have supported us in either a financial or practical way.

Therefore, we would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who has helped and supported us over the past 50 years – we most certainly could not have done it without you all.
